Traditional process or Waterfall has several stages following one another with defined exit/entry criteria between them. Waterfall has advantage of predictability. The crucial requirement for this type of projects is that the scope of the product be known in advance. The weakness of waterfall is that it is too rigid and inert when it comes to addressing changes to functional scope. If the quantity of changes to requirements is low then Waterfall can be very precisely planned and executed.
When the density of changes is relatively big waterfall becomes more of a problem than that of a solution.
